Not Just Sunsets: What to Actually Do in Santorini

Santorini is one Greece’s most beloved islands, full of quaint white buildings and cliffside views.
Though it is touristy, it was one of my favorite Greek islands that I visited because of the many things to do and see here. Many people just want to see the sunset in Oia, but there is so much more to do than just that!
Here is my list of things to do in Santorini!

1. Perissa Beach

A 30 minute bus ride from Fira, Perissa beach is the most famous black sand beach on the island.
The black color comes from eroded volcanic material such as lava. This is the kind of beach that has plenty of space to lay a towel down and relax, or take a nice long stroll along the water.

2. Red Beach

Take the bus from Fira to Akrotiri to reach Red Beach, a place with stunning red cliff views along the blue water.
You can take a short walk to the overlook and enjoy the views from above, or you can take a short trek below to get down to the beach. Just be aware of some steep edges as you go down.

3. Fira to Oia Walk

There is a famous trail that you can take from the town of Fira all the way to Oia.
Although it is more of a hike than a walk, this was my favorite thing to do on the island. The walk is about 6.4mi one way, so I recommend taking the bus back to Fira afterwards. The views were some of the best I’ve seen in all of Greece, and the sunset in Oia is very rewarding. Be prepared for some steep inclines and rocky paths.

4. Blue Domes in Oia

The views in Oia are unmatched.
It will be packed with tourists, but the beautiful colors over the village are worth seeing for everyone. I recommend heading down towards the Oia castle and around that area to be able to see the village from a bit further away. This town will be crowded, but there is no where else you can find this unique scenery.

5. Explore Pyrgos
Pyrgos is another small village a bit further from the coast, where you can escape the crowds. It is a place full of history and authentic experience. Enjoy delicious food, sunset views, and nearby vineyards in this lesser known location.

6. Adventure to the Volcanic Island

You can take a short boat ride and tour the volcanic island of Santorini! Here, you can walk on volcanic rock and take a swim in the hot springs. Be aware that the hot springs are known to be quite stinky!
Note: You have to take a tour to visit the volcanic island!

7. Visit a Local Winery
If you are a wine enthusiast, I recommend booking a wine tasting tour in the vineyards of Santorini. You can see the grapes grown all over the island, and on a tour, you can learn all about the wine making process while tasting all the different variations.

8. Shop in Fira

Fira is the largest town on the island where you will find everything you need – shops, buses, tours, and restaurants.
I recommend spending some time exploring the narrow streets in town and grabbing some souvenirs to take home. There are some nice handmade craft shops with pottery, clothing, and more.

9. Skaros Venetian Fortress

Along the Fira to Oia walk, there is a short detour to some ruins of a fortress that was built on a small rock formation. It is a nice mini hike down to it, and I saw a beautiful sunset from here. It is located just by the town of Imerovigli.

10. Enjoy a Greek Meal

The Greek islands are the best place to try local seafood and wines.
One of the best ways to experience a new place is to try their authentic foods. My favorite place that I ate at was Karma, a restaurant in Oia with a large selection of Greek cuisine.

Whether you’re spending an extended time in Santorini or it’s just a stop on your island hopping journey, I hope you have the chance to see the beauty of the entire island. I highly recommend taking advantage of the buses and exploring other places outside of Fira and Oia. You will find quieter places with still so much to offer!
