A Day in Aegina: Island Escape From Athens

Aegina is a charming little island that doesn’t get quite as many visitors as some of its neighboring islands, but its quietness makes for a nice escape from the bustling city of Athens. It’s very cheap and easy to get to, making it the perfect day trip island escape.

Getting there

Getting to Aegina is super easy and only takes 1.5 hours.
It costs about $10-12 each way for a ferry. I like to use Ferryhopper, it makes the process simple and quick. To get there, you will leave from Piraeus port in Athens, and arrive in Aegina (town).

Things To Do in Aegina
Archeological Site/Museum

Take in coastal sea views while walking through the history of Aegina island.
This archeological site contains ruins from a settlement from 3000 B.C. And the museum contains findings from the island that are as old as 5,000 years! Be sure to check out the view from the temple of Apollo!
Entry costs 4 euro.

Explore the Colorful Streets

The narrow streets in town are absolutely beautiful and full of color!
There are tons of local shops and restaurants to check out while you explore. Note that some of the shops are a little pricy since most items are handmade or locally made.

Relax on the Beach
You can take a walk to a beach close by, or take a taxi to one of the nicer ones such as Klima Beach or Mini Island. We found a small, quiet one by just walking along the road by the water.
try Pistachio Samples

Aegina is famous for its pistachios, and celebrated as some of the best nuts in the world.
You will find many bakeries eager to let you taste their delectable pistachio desserts. You will find any pistachio flavored dessert you can think of, from lattes to baklava. My favorite sample was the pistachio butter!

Enjoy a seafood dinner

The Greek islands are well known for their fresh seafood. You will be able to find it on every corner, especially close to the port. I had an incredible shrimp spaghetti on my trip to Aegina.

Stroll Along the Water

I love a relaxing walk by the water, it’s the perfect way to take in the beauty of the island. If you’re around for sunset, I recommend planning to take your walk then!

Bonus Tips For Visiting Aegina
- You can say no to samples. People are eager to sell you their treats, don’t feel like you have to try all of them.
- The museum is VERY small, but the 4 euro ticket gets you into both the museum and the archeological site.
- Take a taxi to explore the other side of the island. I was traveling on a budget, so I stayed in the main town by the port.
- Expect some stores and restaurants to be closed in the off season (November-March)
While Aegina may not be as impressive as some of the other well known Greek islands, it makes for the perfect day trip getaway from Athens. It is budget friendly and overall a very cute place to explore. If you need a quick break from the city, Aegina is the perfect place.
