A guide to Hydra: Greece's Car-free Island
Hydra is one of Greece’s lesser known islands but it is just as beautiful as the rest.
It was one of my favorite Greek islands I visited due to its quiet neighborhoods and streets. The blooming flowers and crystal clear waters make this island one of the prettiest places I’ve ever been. And the best part is, it’s completely car free!
Here is my guide to visiting the island!
Getting There
Hydra is only a day trip away from Athens, making it a quick and easy island destination.
You can take the ferry from Athens port, it only takes an 1.5 hours on the express ferry each way. You can also check the prices for arriving from other nearby islands using ferryhopper. If traveling from Athens, use Athens-Piraeus, and Hydra as the destinations. There is only one port for passenger ferries in Hydra, so you don’t have to worry about choosing the wrong one.
Note: a round trip ferry ticket costs 60-70€
Getting around the island
The best way to explore the island is on foot. This way you get to see all of the cool narrow streets and hillside views.
Hydra town is fairly large and everything is consolidated there, so could easily spend a day on foot in this part of the island. Another option is by water taxi which can get you to the nearby beaches. The last option, and the most unique, is to travel around town via saddle on a mule. This is one of Hydra’s most famous experiences, but it can be a little bit pricy.
Things to do
- Wander the streets: In hydra, the small streets and stairs can lead to some places that are just unreal. Ditch the google maps and explore the quaint streets of Hydra.
Enjoy a Greek meal: The islands are the best place to try local Greek seafood! I had a fantastic authentic meal at And Onion.
Relax on a beach: Vlychos beach is a nice one close to town, or if you’re up for the water taxi, you can adventure over to Bisti beach.
- Go to a beach bar: Swim in the clear blue water and have a refreshing drink at Hydronetta.
Go up to an overlook: Follow the streets and stairs further up the hillside to see some incredible Mediterranean views.
Historical Archives Museum: Dive into the history of Hydra island by exploring artifacts, paintings, and books from the 18th century.
Places to Eat
- EU Bakery: This bakery is located at the port right when you get off the ferry. They’re wide selection of sweet and savory pastries are the perfect way to start your island excursion.
- And Onion: And Onion had some of the best Greek food I ever tried. We tried a variety of traditional greek dishes like falafel, pita and hummus, and gyros.
Isalos: This cafe is conveniently located by the port, offering charming seaside views. Here you can enjoy a great coffee, smoothie, or a refreshing appetizer.
Tips for Visiting
- Keep in mind that prices will be slightly more expensive here than on the mainland of Greece due to the fact that things must be imported.
Wear some good walking shoes, as walking is most likely going to be your main mode of transportation.
If you have luggage, you can have it transported to your accommodation by a hand cart service or even by a mule! Many hotels offer you help getting your bags from the port to your room.
Many people overlook Hydra. Instead of just coming for the day, it could be worth spending more than one day here rather than some of the other crowded islands.
- Try looking for restaurants further from the port to avoid higher costs. I highly recommend And Onion for a budget meal!

Nearby Places to visit
Hydra is one of the seven Saronic Islands in Greece, just off the coast of the Peloponnese. These islands are close to the mainland, but further from the Cyclade islands, where Santorini is located. The Saronic islands tend to be less touristy, and ferry prices from Athens are cheaper.
Here are some nearby places to check out:
- Aegina – a small, quiet island known for growing some of the best pistachios in the world.
Poros – an island with many beautiful swimming areas and unique vegetation. Be sure to check out Love Bay!
Nafplion – a beautiful coastal town in mainland Greece, with castles and beaches.
Spetses – A Saronic island with rich history and a sophisticated vibe. Here you will find upscale restaurants and luxury homes.
