Travel Guide For an Authentic Naples Experience

The bustling streets of Naples are unique and full of rich history and culture. Don’t expect to see the perfect postcard views here, but rather an authentic Italian experience.

I witnessed the local culture and liveliness in the people who live in Naples, something I did not see in other Italian towns and cities. This city is full of life and excitement, and this is everything you should know before going.

My Naples Travel Guide

When To Visit

I visited Naples at the very end of February, still the off season, but everything was open and there weren’t nearly as many tourists as there would have been a few months later.

Unless you’re looking to spend time on the beaches in the summer sun, I think March or the fall season are great times to visit since there are way less crowds.

Safety

Archway into a bustling Naples Street.

While Naples may be a little chaotic and gritty on the surface, it is no different than any other major Italian city.

Violent crimes are not common, but you must be aware of petty crimes like pickpocketing, especially as a tourist, and it’s best not to be out alone at night. I generally felt very safe exploring Naples with my friends, but I do recommend traveling in groups, especially late at night.

Things To Do

  • Roam Centro Storico – this is the oldest part of the city full of unique shops and souvenirs.
  • Duomo di Napoli – largest cathedral in Naples that shows off the historic architecture in Naples.
  • Try a Neapolitan Pizza – you just can’t visit the pizza capital of the world, and not try one!
  • Day Trip to Pompeii – only a 30 minute train ride to this break taking archeological site.
  • Experience the Nightlife  – Naples is full of trendy bars, be sure to try the famous Aperol Spritz!

Food To Try

  • Sfogliatelle – famous pastry made in Italy that you can find in almost any local bakery. It is a sweet flaky pastry that sometimes has a variety of fillings inside.

  • Cacio e Pepe – a simple cheesy pasta dish that is traditionally made in a Parmesan wheel. It is a must try especially since it is the National dish in Italy.

  • Gelato found on every street in Italy, and is the perfect way to satisfy your sweet tooth after dinner.

  • Pizza Pizza Pizza – Naples is the pizza capital of the world, and I had some of the best pizza I’ve ever had in this city. I highly recommend trying a diavola pizza!

  • Caprese Sandwich – a great lunch that is on the lighter side, it has tomato, mozzarella, and basil inside a delicious baked roll.

Where to Stay

  • Chiaia – a great place for families and is one of the most picturesque parts of the city. This area is full of chic shops, restaurants, and villas.

  • San Lorenzoa good place to be if you’re looking to explore the old town. It is also close to the train station in case you are planning to explore nearby towns.

  • Vomero a little bit further out of the hubbub, which may be nice for a hotel location. It’s located in a hilly district with some stunning views.

Day Trips From Naples

  • PompeiiPompeii is only a 30 minute train ride away and is absolutely worth the visit. Since it is so close, you can still have half of the day to spend in Naples. I recommend allowing about 3-4 hours to explore the whole historical site.

  • Salerno – Salerno is a coastal town with charming seaside views and restraints. Explore the old town and catch the sunset over the Mediterranean Sea.

  • Capri Spend a day on the island of Capri by taking a short ferry from the Naples port. Capri is known for its vibrant buildings and crystal clear waters.

Bonus Tips

  • Utilize luggage storage – they are everywhere, and only $4-10 per day.

  • Exchange money before coming – ATM exchange rates are much higher than exchanging at your bank in your home country.

  • Take advantage of cheap train tickets – see more than just one city on a budget! I recommend Rome or Pompeii.

  • Travel with a group – minimize safety risks by traveling with other people, especially late at night.

Though Naples may not be one of Italy’s top tourist destinations, experiencing the authentic Italian life and culture makes it really special. It is absolutely worth exploring for a few days and adding to an Italian city-hopping trip, and you will likely eat some of the best pizza you’ve ever had here!
