The Future of Travel: 2024 Trends You Can't Ignore
As we near the end of 2024, the need for exploration is growing rapidly, fueled by a desire for deeper connections and unique local experiences. The trend is most significant in younger generations, likely influenced by social media.
Though the motivations for travel are different for everyone, it is clear that they all strive to make the most of their trips this year.
Going Solo
Solo travel has become a huge trend in younger generations, especially with the help of social media.
The hashtag #solotravel has been used over 9 million times on Instagram, and over a million times on TikTok. According to a recent survey by American Express, 76% of millennials and Gen-Z respondents said that they are planning a solo trip this year. More and more travelers are beginning to share their solo travel experiences online, providing tips and inspiration to aspiring travelers.
Why are people planning solo trips?
Self-care – Many people feel like they need a break from the world they are living in, and taking a solo weekend getaway is the perfect way to reconnect with yourself.
Meeting New People – Traveling alone provides many opportunities to branch out and make new friends without relying on someone traveling with you.
Independence – Some people like to do things on their own, and plan their dream trip exactly how they imagine it.
Less Hassle – Planning for one person tends to be easier than trying to accommodate for other people.
Try a New Hobby – Perhaps you want to try something new, like a local cooking class, yoga, learn history, etc.
Craving Local Experiences
Travelers are starting to take more of an interest in authentic experiences rather than typical sightseeing tours.
People are developing a passion to make their trips more meaningful and memorable. According to Booking.com’s Travel Sustainable Research Report, 75% of respondents “seek authentic experiences that are representative of the culture.”
Authenticity is defined differently by individuals, meaning everyone has their own interpretation of what they consider “authentic” when they travel. For some people, a local cooking class is authentic, while to someone else, visiting the restaurants that locals visit is just as authentic. However one defines it, it has become an important aspect of travel that people are looking for this year.
Blend of Business and Leisure Travel
After the Covid-19 pandemic, the demand for remote jobs has skyrocketed. As a result, the hospitality industry is starting to incorporate deals geared towards digital nomads.
I recently spent a weekend at the Club Wyndham in Las Vegas, and discovered that they offer a Workation Deal that allows travelers to work, relax, and have discounts towards hotel amenities. There are many hotels and resorts offering similar deals to encourage digital nomads to visit, causing many of them to extend their stays to enjoy personal time at their destination.
Maybe you’re planning to hop on the newest trends for your next trip. Perhaps you need some time alone, you’re seeking authentic travel experiences, or want to save on a workation deal. Whatever it may be, I encourage you to go out and experience the world. There is so much value in travel and the memories that come from it.
